Gold processing involves several methods to extract and refine the metal from its ore. The choice of method depends on factors like the type of ore, its purity, and the desired end product. Traditional techniques, such as panning and sluicing, are still used for small-scale operations, while large-scale mining relies on advanced technologies like cyanidation and smelting.

Crushing and Grinding

The first step in gold processing is crushing the ore into smaller pieces. This is typically done using jaw crushers or cone crushers. Once the ore is crushed, it is ground into a fine powder using ball mills or rod mills. Grinding increases the surface area of the ore, making it easier to extract the gold particles during subsequent stages.

Chemical Extraction Methods

Cyanidation is the most common method for extracting gold from ore. In this process, the crushed ore is mixed with a dilute cyanide solution, which dissolves the gold. The gold-cyanide complex is then separated from the waste material using activated carbon or zinc precipitation. Another method, called heap leaching, involves piling crushed ore onto a pad and sprinkling it with cyanide solution to dissolve the gold over time.

For ores that contain sulfide minerals, flotation is often used. This process involves adding chemicals to the ore slurry to make the gold particles hydrophobic. Air bubbles are then introduced, which attach to the gold particles and float them to the surface for collection.

Refining and Purification

Once the gold is extracted, it undergoes refining to remove impurities. The Miller process uses chlorine gas to purify gold, while the Wohlwill process relies on electrolysis for higher purity levels. Both methods produce gold with a purity of 99.5% or higher, suitable for industrial or jewelry applications.

Small-scale refiners may use aqua regia, a mixture of nitric and hydrochloric acids, to dissolve gold and separate it from other metals. The dissolved gold is then precipitated out using chemicals like sodium metabisulfite or oxalic acid.

After refining, the gold is cast into bars or granules for storage or further processing. The final product can be alloyed with other metals to achieve desired properties for specific uses, such as increased hardness for jewelry or improved conductivity for electronics.
