The Leblanc process is a historical method for producing soda ash (sodium carbonate) from salt (sodium chloride) and sulfuric acid. 1. Salt Treatment: The process begins with the treatment of common salt (NaCl). The salt is heated with concentrated sulfuric acid (H₂SO₄) in a furnace to produce sodium sulfate (Na₂SO₄) and hydrogen chloride gas (HCl). This reaction is highly exothermic and requires careful temperature control.

2. Formation of Salt Cake: The sodium sulfate, also known as salt cake, is then mixed with crushed limestone (CaCO₃) and coal (C). This mixture is heated in a rotary kiln or reverberatory furnace at high temperatures. The carbon in the coal acts as a reducing agent, converting the sulfate to sodium sulfide (Na₂S).

3. Extraction of Sodium Carbonate: The sodium sulfide is dissolved in water, and calcium carbonate (from limestone) reacts with it to form sodium carbonate (Na₂CO₃) and calcium sulfide (CaS). The solution is then filtered to separate the soluble sodium carbonate from the insoluble calcium sulfide.

4. Crystallization: The filtered sodium carbonate solution is evaporated to concentrate it, leading to crystallization. The crystals are then washed and dried to produce pure soda ash.

5. Byproduct Handling: Hydrogen chloride gas generated in the first step is absorbed in water to produce hydrochloric acid, which could be sold or used elsewhere. Calcium sulfide, a waste product, was often discarded, though later methods attempted to recover sulfur from it.
