The aggregate crushing value (ACV) test is a fundamental experiment conducted to evaluate the strength of coarse aggregates used in construction. It measures the resistance of aggregates to crushing under gradually applied compressive load. To ensure accurate and reliable results, certain precautions must be taken during the experiment.

First, it is essential to ensure that the sample is representative of the aggregate batch. The sample should be thoroughly mixed and reduced to the required size using a quartering or riffling method. Any deviation from this can lead to inconsistent results. Additionally, the aggregate must be oven-dried at a temperature of 105–110°C for 24 hours to remove moisture, as water content can significantly affect the crushing value.

During the preparation of the test specimen, care must be taken to avoid segregation of particles. The aggregate should be compacted in three layers within the cylindrical mold, with each layer receiving 25 blows from a tamping rod. Uneven compaction can result in inaccurate readings. The surface of the compacted aggregate must be leveled properly before placing the plunger on top.

The loading machine used for the test should be calibrated regularly to ensure precise application of the compressive load. The load must be applied uniformly at a rate of 40 kN per minute until 400 kN is reached. Any variation in loading rate can compromise the integrity of the test results.

After crushing, the sample should be carefully removed from the mold and sieved through a 2.36 mm sieve. The material passing through the sieve is weighed accurately, and calculations are performed to determine the aggregate crushing value. Proper handling during this stage is crucial to avoid loss of fines or contamination.

Finally, safety precautions should not be overlooked. Personal protective equipment (PPE), such as gloves and safety glasses, must be worn throughout the experiment to prevent injuries from flying particles or equipment malfunction.
