Heat hardening is a critical process in the production of iron ore pellets, with magnetite and hematite being the two primary types of iron ore used. Both materials undergo induration (heat hardening) to achieve the desired physical and metallurgical properties. Differences in Oxidation Behavior

Magnetite (Fe3O4) contains both ferrous (Fe2+) and ferric (Fe3+) iron, making it more reactive during heat hardening. When exposed to high temperatures in an oxidizing atmosphere, magnetite oxidizes to hematite (Fe2O3), releasing heat in an exothermic reaction. This oxidation process strengthens the pellets by forming a rigid hematite lattice structure. In contrast, hematite pellets are already fully oxidized (Fe2O3) and do not undergo further oxidation during heat hardening. Instead, they rely on sintering and recrystallization to achieve strength.

Energy Requirements and Pellet Quality

The exothermic oxidation of magnetite reduces the energy required for induration compared to hematite, making it more energy-efficient. However, controlling the oxidation rate is crucial to prevent cracking or weakening of the pellets. Hematite pellets, while requiring higher energy input, offer more consistent quality as they are less prone to structural changes during heat treatment. The final product from hematite tends to have higher porosity but lower mechanical strength compared to magnetite-derived pellets.

Both types of pellets have their advantages in blast furnace operations. Magnetite-based pellets often exhibit higher reducibility due to their denser structure, while hematite pellets may offer better permeability in the furnace stack. The choice between them depends on factors like energy costs, pellet quality requirements, and downstream processing needs.
